My mother was a switchboard operator. I saw that image first hand.

Dan, I had seen operators like your mother work those boards , it was amazing how they knew exactly what to do with each call!
She worked for several years in Pittsburgh’s largest department store. There were 10-12 operators tucked away up on the 11th floor. I was there once during the holiday season and the noise and the motion were mind-numbing.
My wife’s aunt in Poland was an operator , too . I cant’ really imagine it .
